Exchange Rate Sources and Methodology
The AliExpress exchange rate is calculated by comparing prices for the same products in USD and local currencies, with official exchange rates used as a benchmark.
AliExpress Rate
Calculated by comparing prices for hundreds of the same AliExpress products in USD and the selected local currency.
How is the rate calculated?
The service compares prices for the same products in USD and the selected local currency. For each product, it determines a possible exchange-rate range while accounting for price rounding. The system then identifies the rate that is consistent with the largest number of products in the sample. Before publication, the result is verified again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pay for AliExpress purchases in Romanian lei?
No. On AliExpress, the Romanian leu (RON) can only be selected as a display currency – AliExpress states this directly in its currency settings. Orders are paid in US dollars or euros. If your card is denominated in RON, your bank or payment provider will convert the amount into the payment currency.
Why does AliExpress show prices in RON but switch the order to USD during checkout?
Prices in lei are shown so shoppers can more easily understand the cost in their local currency. They are converted equivalents, not the final transaction amount. During checkout, AliExpress shows the amount in US dollars, so the actual amount charged to your card may differ from the price you previously saw in RON.
What is cheaper on AliExpress – paying with a card in Romanian lei or from a USD account?
It depends on the exchange rate and fees charged by your bank or payment provider. If you pay with a card denominated in RON, the USD amount is converted into lei. If you already hold US dollars in your account, there is no additional currency conversion at the time of purchase. The best option is therefore the one with the lower total cost after exchange rates and any applicable fees are taken into account.
How is the amount converted if AliExpress charges in USD but the card is denominated in RON?
AliExpress sends the payment amount to your bank in US dollars, after which it is converted into Romanian lei according to the rules that apply to your card. Depending on the bank, the Visa or Mastercard exchange rate, the bank’s own exchange rate, and a currency conversion fee may apply. As a result, the actual amount charged in RON may differ from the amount calculated using the reference rate published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) or the European Central Bank (ECB).
Is it worth converting Romanian lei to US dollars before paying on AliExpress?
Sometimes. If you have a USD account or a multi-currency card, compare the RON→USD rate available for an advance exchange with the rate and fees that would apply to automatic conversion when you pay. If buying US dollars in advance is cheaper, it can reduce the overall cost. However, if your provider applies the same exchange rate and fees to both manual and automatic conversions, exchanging the money beforehand will not save you anything.
Can an AliExpress refund in RON differ from the amount originally paid?
Yes. If AliExpress refunds the payment in USD or EUR to a card denominated in Romanian lei, the amount is converted back into RON. The exchange rate at the time of the refund may differ from the rate used when you made the purchase, so you may receive slightly more or fewer lei even if AliExpress refunds the full amount in the original payment currency.
